The Bridgeport softball community is mourning a longtime teammate who police say died in New York this week.
Benji Labrador is Bridgeport's Parks and Recreation's board president and longtime softball coach.
"The league is going to miss him," said Labrador.
Police say 42-year-old Nate Montalvo
was killed when the tractor-trailer truck he was driving veered out of control and crashed on a bridge, plunging onto I-287 in Harrison, New York Wednesday morning.
Montalvo was a Guilford resident at the time of his death but grew up on Lindley Street in Bridgeport and attended Bullard Havens Technical High School.
"People loved being around him. He was just an easy-going guy, and I know he'll be missed in the softball world," said Labrador.
A wake is scheduled at Bridgeport's Luz De Paz Funeral Home on Saturday, Jan. 28. His burial is set to take place at Bridgeport's Lakeview Cemetery Monday, Jan. 30.
Labrador says his friend will always be remembered for having a caring heart that touched every person he met.
"There's a lot of memories," he said. "Later on in life, when we get that calling, we'll be up there playing softball with you all over again."
Labrador says Montalvo leaves behind three sons.
A
GoFundMe has been set up for Montalvo's family.
