New York City's Cardinal Edward Egan remained hospitalized Monday with stomach pains after he was taken to St. Vincent's in Manhattan Saturday.
Doctors have postponed Egan's pacemaker surgery, which was scheduled for Monday. According to New York Archdiocese spokesman Joe Zwilling, the surgery was postponed Sunday to give Egan time to regain his strength. Doctors said the pacemaker implant is not an emergency and can wait until Egan has fully recovered from his stomach ailment.
The New York Archdiocese was not sure Egan would be well enough to participate in Holy Week activities. The archbishop is scheduled to retire this month after leading New York City's Catholic community for nearly nine years. Milwaukee Archbishop Timothy Dolan will succeed him.
