Police say three similar incidents happened in East Haddam and Somers.
Bogus phone calls claimed a family member was in police custody, and the scammer requested money.
The person of interest is described as a man, who is 6 feet, 3 inches tall and in his late twenties.
Anyone with information is asked to call police.
