A large fire tore through a housing complex in Norwalk Monday, displacing dozens of people.
The fire sparked around 4:30 p.m. at the Stonewood condominiums on Richards Avenue.
Firefighters from neighboring fire departments arrived to help battle the flames, and authorities remained wary of hot spots Tuesday.
The fire forced everyone in the complex's 54 units to evacuate. Some were taken to a nearby Walmart for warmth as temperatures outside dropped below freezing. The Red Cross is working to help house them temporarily.
No injuries have been reported.
Acting Norwalk Fire Chief Gino Gatto says the fire began when one or two smokers on a third-floor balcony discarded butts in a plastic bucket. He says the burning plastic dripped down the side of the building and spread as winds fanned the flames.
"We are lucky that there was no loss of life," he says.
The Norwalk Fire Victims Fund is accepting donations on behalf of the victims.
