A Bridgeport mother is speaking to News 12 exclusively today after she says her child, who has autism, was attacked by four classmates.
"He was attacked, assaulted," says Nijia Ruiz, the boy's sister.
The family of Caleb Ruiz says the third-grader at Dunbar Elementary School was beaten by a group of bullies Thursday afternoon.
"Caleb came to me crying -- both of his eyes were bloodshot red -- telling me he doesn't want to be here no more," Nijia Ruiz says, describing her brother's reaction Thursday afternoon. "He wants to end it. He wants to leave. He doesn't want to come to school anymore."
Nivia Ruiz says her son was kicked in the stomach and backside and that bullies put their hands around his neck. They say Caleb was attacked by four fellow students during physical education class in the latest of a series of bullying incidents that began two months ago.
The parents say Caleb is unable to defend himself. They describe the ongoing abuse as traumatizing and say they have reported the cases to school officials, who have failed to take action.
School Superintendent Fran Rabinowitz says the case is being investigated. But she also says the school does not have a record indicating that Caleb has autism.
The family provided medical records to News 12 that appear to clearly document the diagnosis.
"My brother's only 8 years old, and he shouldn't have to go through this type of stuff," says Anjelle Davila, Caleb's other sister. "No kid should."
