The family of a Fairfield teacher has been forced to evacuate their home in Turkey following Monday’s 7.8 magnitude earthquake.
Dylan Connor says his wife’s family fled out of fear their home would collapse and are currently staying in a farmhouse in the countryside about a half hour away.
Connor and his wife are both on the Syrian American Council, and Connor has friends in turkey, too.
As disaster relief organizations like Fairfield-based Save the Children have teams on the ground to help, Connor’s friends say the situation is dire.
“My friend, who I worked with last time I was in the border region, he just told me that his sister’s house collapsed. She lives in Turkey. His niece was pulled alive, but his two nephews are dead,” he said.
Connor says it's important for the people in Turkey and Syria to feel a sense of hope. He encourages Connecticut residents to host vigils and raise awareness on social media.
