More than 100 Bronx residents have decided to sue their landlord over the alleged unlivable conditions at 1600 Sedgewick Ave.
Attorneys from the Urban Justice Center say inspectors recently failed dozen of apartments with Section 8 violations, which put tenants at risk of losing their homes. Residents of 1600 Sedgewick Ave. say they have been complaining about leaky ceilings, broken front doors and no heat for too long.
Even after these complaints, residents say the landlord raised rents in some apartments. Attorneys say that under New York State law, it is illegal to deregulate apartments and raise rent while landlords continue to receive tax breaks.
The landlord, who has yet to comment, has taken multiple tenants to court before over unpaid utility bills.
