'Milestone moment:' New law raising tobacco purchase age goes into effect Tuesday
State and local leaders kicked off a countdown in Bridgeport Sunday morning for Connecticut's new tobacco law going into effect Tuesday.
The minimum age for purchasing tobacco and vaping products will be 21.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Mayor Joe Ganim and members of the Bridgeport City Council came together Sunday in support of the "milestone moment."
Gov. Ned Lamont signed a bill into law raising the legal age to buy vaping products, as well as cigars, cigarettes and tobacco paraphernalia, from 18 to 21.
Officials say the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services will be responsible for carrying out spontaneous compliance checks on e-cigarette dealers and referring violators to the state, which could in turn impose penalties.
The new law also includes a 10% tax on the wholesale price of many vaping products.
