Norwalk Salvation Army celebrates 140 years of service

The Norwalk Salvation Army was recognized Wednesday for 140 years of service.
Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling read a proclamation praising their work in the community. There was also a ribbon-cutting of the Salvation Army's new standalone food pantry and renovated parish.
Officials say they help those in need with rent and utility assistance, literacy programs, groceries and more.
"Our request for food assistance is increasing month after month. We average approximately 70 households every month coming for groceries," said Norwalk Salvation Army Major Persi Sanclemente. "When you tally up the poundage that we've distributed, it's been over 40,000 pounds of food to people right here in Norwalk."
The pantry is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
