Protesters rallied Monday at City Hall against proposed cuts to the city's library system.
Those at the rally are upset that libraries could see close to $36.2 million less come 2024.
"We see cuts, cuts to the bone, said Council Member Chi Ossé. “And now, we're seeing cuts to the marrow."
The mayor's office says the library budget for the 2023 is about $448 million, all split among the three library systems. For 2024, libraries could be looking at $411 million.
"I head to the library so I can do my schoolwork in peace,” said student Yanari Rodriguez. “Free from distractions, studying at the library has actually improved my grades and I'm not alone."
"$11 billion for policing, and they're asking for more money,” added Council Member Tiffany Cabán. “$11 billion, when our libraries should be made whole."
In a statement, the mayor’s office said: “It is inaccurate to say we cut libraries' funding in January’s preliminary budget. We will continue to evaluate their needs and work with them through the budget process."
The statement added that Mayor Eric Adams did add $36.5 million in this year's budget to maintain the facilities.
A finalized budget should come in June.
