When News 12 was at Route 22 near New Providence Road, the highway was completely under water.
Traffic is moving again a day later, but the flooding caused a lot of damage. So, what is next for those affected?
This isn’t the first time the Scotch Plains Animal Hospital has experienced flooding, but it was definitely the worst. The business sits in a flood zone on the FEMA map. Dr. Wendy Lim bought the practice from a retiring doctor in 2023, and since then, it’s flooded several times.
"Once a year, I get flooded, so it’s just a natural disaster. I’m hoping that this is not the trend where it just continues to get worse and worse," Lim said.
Last night, News 12 saw flooding take over major roadways, including Route 22, where the animal hospital is located. Dr. Lim was the last one in the building and had to be evacuated to the Scotchwood Diner across the highway. She was saved, but her car wasn’t.
"I saw the car had moved, and then I just watched it do a K-turn and went the right direction westbound until I couldn't see it anymore," Lim said.
And that was a common scene last night. Several cars were stranded along the highway, some completely submerged.
AAA Mid-Atlantic spokesperson Tracy Noble explained what steps people should take following a major flood. She says if your car were flooded, do not get in the car and try to start it. She says to call your insurance company instead.
"Let them be your guide as to what you need to do and follow their instructions," Noble said. "Take as many pictures and not only photograph your vehicle, but the surroundings. What it looks like. What was near your vehicle,” Noble said.
As for Dr. Lim, her practice will be back up and running on Thursday. As for her staying at this location? She says that it will depend on how flood-proof she can make the property.
"I have some plans that I can hopefully do something, but if not, I might have to find a new location," Lim said.
