Tolls could return to Connecticut highways.

Gov. Dannel Malloy says he plans to focus on the state's transportation system in the new year and is not ruling out tolls as a way to pay for better roads and rails.

Republican state Sen. Toni Boucher says bringing tolls back would cause more problems for people in the state including traffic on back roads, since drivers would likely get off the highway to avoid paying them. She also says the state initially got rid of toll booths after a tractor-trailer accident at a toll both in Stratford in 1985 killed seven people. Boucher says they should remain a thing of the past.

Those who are in favor of bringing back tolls say they would help pay for much-needed improvements on I-95.

The new legislative session begins on Jan. 7. State leaders say it is not clear how many toll booths would be built or where they would be located.

The governor's transportation plans will be revealed next year.
