Bridgeport city officials and young athletes celebrated the completion of three new baseball fields Thursday.
Baseball's "Iron Man" Cal Ripken Jr. was at the new Blackham School Youth Development Park ballfields to meet with kids and help open the new synthetic-turf diamonds.
Ripkin's father's foundation, the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, donated $500,000 to the fields.
City officials say the fields near Blackham Elementary School had deteriorated over the years and needed an upgrade.
The Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation says that it plans to create 15 more baseball fields across the country this year.
