Seven people were hurt after flames broke out at a Soundview building this morning.
Officials say it started in the basement of 1098 Croes Ave. at around 6:30 a.m. It spread to two alarms due to heavy smoke and took about an hour to get under control.
The fire chief says most of the tenants had already evacuated the building on their own by the time emergency crews arrived.
The injuries, which are all minor, include three civilians and four firefighters. Residents are now back in their apartments.
According to neighbors, the basement is vacant office and retail space.
The cause is under investigation.
