City officials in Bridgeport say they are getting ready to tear down a building after it was severely destroyed Wednesday by a massive fire.
The fire broke out at the old AGI Rubber Company building on Stratford Avenue.
According to officials, paperwork was filed Thursday morning for an emergency demolition.
Officials say the damage to the building, and what is left, is the reason for tearing it down. There have been fires at the building in the past few years, but nothing significant that called for a demolition.
The city says it has been planning to demolish the building anyway, which is their property, but some people wonder now about other blighted properties in the city. News 12 Connecticut is told there are several of them.
But officials say it's not all that easy to take over a vacant property and decide to knock it down. It’s a process that requires tracking down property owners, dealing with permits and legal issues.
It could take years and often the city ends up paying more to tear the building down.
As for the investigation into the cause of the fire, fire officials say they do have people of interest who may have been in the area when the fire occurred and are currently being interviewed by police.
