March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and the occasion is hitting home for a Bridgeport woman who was diagnosed with the illness.
Isis Wright, 32, says the past two years have been an uphill battle as she's undergone surgery, radiation and chemotherapy for stage 4 cancer.
Wright says she is determined to live a long life and is urging more people to get screened. She was wearing blue on Saturday to symbolize unity and health during the national month of awareness.
Wright's mom's says her daughter is a kind and positive person, and watching her suffer has not been easy.
"To look at your child and you can't do nothing, as a mother, it's hard," she said.
The family is finding strength by building awareness. They say with the right outlook, and the right attitude, you can get through virtually any struggle.
The CDC says 140,000 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with colorectal cancer every year and the number of patients below the age of 50 is growing.
