A Norwalk man drove his car off the road and into the Five Mile River in Darien early Saturday morning.
Darien First Selectman Jon Zagrodzky tells News 12 it happened just off of Tokeneke Road and Five Mile River Road between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.
Zagrodzky says the man fell asleep at the wheel after working late hours as a nurse.
He was able to self-extricate from the car and declined medical treatment.
Zagrodzky says the man's girlfriend came to the scene and picked him up.
This is the second time in recent months a car has plunged into the river. Back in February, one person died and another was hospitalized after their car veered off the road and into the river.
