Demolition began Wednesday on a Stratford building that was nearly a century old.
Town officials say it will take about to week to tear down the old Mercer Coal Company towers.
The towers have been abandoned for more than 30 years and are coming down as part of an effort to redevelop a stretch of Stratford Avenue.
Mayor John Harkins says the towers, which are highly visible, make the area appear blighted.
Because the structure is so close to Metro-North railroad tracks, workers are taking the building down piece by piece, rather than with a controlled implosion.
