A Fairfield school bus driver played the role of local hero yesterday by evacuating students when a fire broke out on board. William Strickland says he was driving a group of Fairfield Middle School students home when the engine started overheating. He says he pulled over, got the children off the bus and battled the flames with a fire extinguisher. Firefighters arrived on the scene and finished putting out the fire. The bus company says Strickland had recently completed his training and is a valued member of their staff. Authorities say the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
