The Bridgeport Democratic Town Committee has endorsed Ernie Newton for another run for state representative.
The convicted felon is trying to win back his seat in the 124th District that he occupied for 15 years. Incumbent Don Clemons is retiring.
Newton resigned from the General Assembly and served time in prison following his corruption conviction. He is currently fighting fraud charges from his 2012 campaign when he tried to run for state Senate. He predicts that the case will be dropped for lack of evidence.
Meanwhile, state Rep. Christina Ayala did not receive her party's endorsement when the Democrats met last night. Ayala is also facing criminal investigation for allegedly using a false address, among other accusations.
The party instead supported Chris Rosario, the anti-blight chief under Mayor Bill Finch.
The primary will be held on Aug. 12.
