Firefighters from Bridgeport and Stratford battled a fire that broke out overnight at Success Village Complex, killing one person and injuring another.
The Bridgeport Fire Department confirmed Friday night that one person died from their injuries suffered in the fire.
The other victim’s condition had not been confirmed as of Friday night but is considered critical.
The identity of the victims are being withheld due to the active investigation.
"I woke up, I heard screaming, then I saw the fire," said resident Cathy Serbin. "And then I saw some lady hanging out of the window with smoke coming out.
Ty Bird, the president of the apartment complex, said the fire occurred in building 86, which is on the Bridgeport side. He said eight units were affected by the fire. Residents are not able to return to the building and power has been shut off.
Bridgeport resident Melba Robinson saw the fire when she drove to her mother’s apartment around 4:15 a.m. to drop off her kids before work.
"I noticed the second floor was on fire,” she said. "All I started doing after I saw that was tell my mom and everybody else, 'You all need to get out the building,' because you couldn't get through the hallway in flames."
Robinson’s mother was able to get out from the first floor.
"I tried to save two people, but they didn't want to jump," said resident William Szabados.
The Bridgeport Acting Fire Chief Lance Edwards said the two victims were taken to the hospital. Neighbors told News 12 Connecticut they are an elderly couple who were trapped on the second floor.
Edwards also said the fire marshal is looking into what caused the fire.
The Red Cross is working with the residents who were displaced.
