A shooting over the weekend in Stamford left one woman dead and two men injured, investigators say.
The incident happened around 12:15 a.m. Sunday in the parking lot at the Oak Park apartment complex near Ursula Place and Dale Street.
Police say they believe there was a shootout, involving up to four gunmen. They say around 30 to 40 people were gathered for an end of summer celebration when at least 30 shots rang out.
When police arrived, 35-year-old Shernetta Dunmore was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and arms. She was taken to Stamford Hospital where she later died.
Two other male victims, ages 43 and 27 from Stamford and Bridgeport, were shot in their legs and taken to hospitals by private vehicles. They have since been released.
Investigators believe Dunmore, a mother to a 14-year-old son, and the other two men who were shot were innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire.
Police are working on speaking to multiple witnesses, as no arrests have been made.
"It's apparent to us they know each other," says Sgt. Paul Guzda, of the Stamford Police Department. "And they possibly know who fired these guns, and they're probably a valuable source of information."
He says they are having limited cooperation and the investigation is a "work in progress."
A vigil was held Monday evening for Dunmore. Her family is urging anyone with information to come forward.
"Go talk to the police. You are not a snitch, you are a beautiful soul just like the person you are mourning," said Jamal Dunmore, the victim's brother.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Major Crimes Unit at 203-977-4417.
Police say there has been a slight uptick in gun violence recently in Stamford.
