State lawmakers advanced a bill on Tuesday requiring the Department of Transportation to replace any trees they cut down in the future along I-95.
The new motion results from last year when Fairfield residents became upset after the state cut down dozens of trees along the roadway.
“Something has to be done for those living along whether it's the highway or the Merritt Parkway, when this large-scale deforestation goes on,” said Rep. Tom O’Dea.
The DOT says it removed the trees for drivers' safety.
A tree replanting program could cost up to $100 million a year statewide.
