A new petition is asking Gov. Ned Lamont to allow restaurants and bars to sell premade cocktails to go during the shutdown.
Connecticut bars and restaurants currently can sell factory-sealed alcohol, beer and wine with to-go orders, but they can't sell cocktails made in house even if they're bottled and sealed. A Connecticut chef and restaurant owner wants to see this changed.
Chef John Brennan owns Elm City Social in New Haven and Olives and Oil in New Haven and Seymour. Brennan says his revenue is down 60% to 70% right now
He tells News 12 his restaurants are known for their specialty cocktails, which he'd like to batch and bottle for sale. Brennan has started a
Change.org petition asking the governor to change his current order.
"I don't see any safety concerns honestly," he says. "It's very similar to going to a brewery and picking up a growler, or going to a package store and picking up wine coolers."
He says it'll help bartenders get back to work and help restaurants use the inventory they have, and it's something that other states, like New York, allow.
"New York allows cocktails to go, Maine allows cocktails to go, Washington, D.C., the capital of our country, they allow cocktails to go," Brennan says.
Brennan says this all comes down to survival for restaurants and bars.
Lamont's office says it's looking into the restaurant's request.
