The commission tasked with creating a congestion pricing plan for Manhattan approved its final recommendations on the mayor?s proposal Thursday.

The Traffic Congestion Mitigation Commission?s recommendations, which Mayor Michael Bloomberg is supporting, are designed to reduce traffic and provide money to improve the transit system.

Cars traveling south of 60th Street in Manhattan at certain times of the day would be charged $8. The mayor originally wanted the toll at 86th Street. The new plan also calls for a $1 taxi surcharge and increased parking meter rates.

The plan has been criticized by some drivers and elected officials. Drivers say the fee may create an economic hardship for some that must commute to work by car.

To go into effect, the plan needs to be approved by the City Council and the state Legislature.
