School bus drivers in Stamford are still waiting for paychecks, two weeks after Gov. Ned Lamont ordered schools systems to keep paying transportation workers and the companies they work for.
Why the delay? Stamford Public Schools and First Student, the district's private bus carrier, released clashing statements Tuesday over whether or not they are working together on a revised payment plan.
A First Student spokeswoman says the company is "actively working with the district" to come up with a revised payment agreement.
Stamford Public Schools says that's not the case.
"The district reached out to First Student earlier this month, asking if they would like to engage in a meaningful discussion on this matter," says spokeswoman Sharon Beadle. "As of today, we have not yet heard back from them."
The Teamsters Union says its school bus drivers are running out of money and time.
On March 31, Gov. Lamont issued an executive order directing schools systems to continue paying bus companies, so they can keep paying employees and provide them health insurance. The order allows districts to renegotiate agreements, but it must be done "promptly."
Officials tell News 12 that there will be an FAQ document posted Wednesday on the issue of paying bus drivers.
School bus drivers for the district have been off the job and off the payroll for a month. Drivers say they're worried that the negotiating will drag on for weeks, leaving them without money.
The Teamsters Union says it's also working to get bus drivers in Bridgeport paid. The drivers work for a different bus company.
Lamont's office says it will be providing additional guidance to school systems and bus carriers tomorrow to prevent delays.
