A person accused of shocking animal cruelty in West Babylon has been able to avoid investigators for three months and now Suffolk County police are asking for any witnesses to make an arrest.
"One of the members came in and said she saw someone throw a cat out the window," Louisa Delgado, who works in the shopping center near where the incident happened, said.
Suffolk County police said someone threw two cats out of their car window while they were driving along Montauk Highway near the intersection of Fleets Point Drive on June 17, around 9 a.m.
Investigators said the person was in a sedan traveling westbound.
Another passing driver struck and killed one of the cats. The other was rushed to a veterinarian, treated and survived.
Suffolk County Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information that leads to an arrest.
"It's a tragedy," Lindenhurst resident John Debacker said. "It's a living animal and that's sad."
Long Island Cat Kitten Solution Vice President John Debacker said cases of people dumping pets and animals is far too common a problem on Long Island.
"I get these calls almost every day," he said. "Yesterday, I got a cat whose owner had moved and left the cat behind at their apartment. They just threw them outside like garbage. Like nothing, not a care in the world. It's really disgusting."
Anyone with information about the cruelty incident can contact the police at 1-800-220-TIPS.
